the return

ok peoples, im back from a much needed vacation from the weblogosphere… its been a little slow around here a know. anyways thanks to mister O for dropping some posts the past few days… we’ll have the osrvs and throwback thursdays back on track soon, along with all of the goodness that youve gotten used to over the last year. in the meantime ima try and fill you in on some things that have been going in the past few weeks.

  • first of all, the news surfaced last week that 80% of the Jamaican Broadcasting Corporation’s audio archives have been stolen between 2004-2007. this is a really sad thing, especially since the premesis was apparently under the control of the Belgian firm Besix that was doing some work nearby on the transportation center. i wonder how long before the thousands of original recordings are on e-bay and bought up by european collectors. colonial undertones anyone? here’s a quote from JA minister of information, culture, youth, and sports Olivia Grange.

“Those who have committed this act have done violence to our deep cultural heritage. This archive was expected to be a core asset of the PBCJ which will be taking to the airwaves in the near future with a great variety of informational, educational and culturally entertaining programmes. I am not sure whether enough was done to secure this national treasure but we will know more as the police investigations continue.” (via)

needless to say this is a very sad event and i sincerely hope that this important historical resource is returned to its         proper place…

  • like everyone else, im over here fiendin for the rest of the wire season to leak drop. my thoughts on the season so far are mixed. im into the third episode now and initially i was disappointed. without dropping any spoilers on here i will say that like a lot of other people, the newsroom scenes are not so great for me, although i do like the part where they make fun of calling things ‘dickensian’ (which is the word that fancy reviewers like to use for the show itself). my other complaint is just how unrealistic mcnulty’s whole scheem is… im having a hard time taking it seriously. other than that im lovin it, good to have some of the kids back, cant wait to see what comes of the whole marlo vs omar situation, and the scenes in jessup are classic. i dont think i need to really ad this, but if you dont know yet, check out the wire, its dope. — also, theres been a whole heap of ink spilled about this new season, i would try to give you some links, but im lazy, so heres a recent one… and heres wayne&wax’s take on the music in the show. (and for the curious, here is a student film from 2003 starring the then unknown jamie hector–the wire’s marlo stanfield)
  • another show that ive been watching is a sitcom from england that ran in the early nineties, desmonds. for my uk and canada peoples this is prolly sounding pretty stuey right now, but that shit has me dying. its set in a barbershop in peckham, south london, and the characters are hillarious. family-friendly humor at its best. i really wish they had run this show back home. so if you havent peeped it… do so.
  • in the weird world of hip-hop… cover art was released for nas’ upcoming album… what do yall think of this? i find it… interesting. ( on a related note, heres a couple of unreleased videos from nasir that just surfaced). and i dont know what else happened… i get bored reading about hip hop.
  • and finally some sad news from a few weeks ago was the passing of jazz legend and montreal native Oscar Peterson. his legacy will live on through countess recordings. gone but not forgotten. read an obit here.

  1. I read similar article also named eturn at music.mnp, and it was completely different. Personally, I agree with you more, because this article makes a little bit more sense for me
